Welcome to the Laboratoire de Physique Théorique d’Orsay (Laboratory of Theoretical Physics). This laboratory is a joint research unit of CNRS and Univ. Paris-Sud (UMR 8627). Its main lines of research deal with particle physics, cosmology, statistical physics and mathematical physics
The activities in particle physics are focused on the fundental interaction of the elementary constituents of matter (described by the Standard Model) as well as the physics beyond the Standard Model. These works have strong connections with current and forthcoming experiments, specially those in surrounding laboratories (LAL and IPN).
The research in statistical physics is centred on systems made of a large number of constituents (or "degrees of freedom"). More specifically, LPT researches study coulombic systems, out-of-equilibrium systems, reaction-diffusion processes, granular systems, random geometry and complex networks. Some are applied to the propagation of epidemics and to large computer networks.
Mathematical physics is concerned with algebric and geometric methods in various domains (non-commutative geometry, quantum field theory) and with classical and functional analysis in quantum mechanics and field theory.
Researchers in cosmology work on gravitation with extra-dimensions, and on the initial conditions of the primordial Universe and their impact on galactic structures. The group has strong links with experimental laboratories (IAS and LAL).
These groups work in close collaboration on subjects at the interface (particle/cosmology, statistics/mathematics...). In addition to their research activities, the members of LPT take part in the training of students through teaching activities in various LMD modules at Univ. Paris-Sud 11 and through training periods and PhD.
